Garden Report – Sunflower

by Mark Schrull

7/24/2013 Lorain, Ohio, USA – It really has been a fine summer for plants this year.  It was a wet June.  Lots of rain, followed by about 10 days of hot dry weather in the beginning of July.  Just when I was starting to think drought, more rain came.  I think this area is going to have a bumper crop this year of vegetables, especially corn.

The sunflower planted along side the corner of the front porch is over 6′ tall now.  Because this corner gets a lot of wind, I added a support tie on the main stalk using rag strips.

These are supposed to be a giant, dinner plate size sunflowers.  The last week of May I planted seeds alongside the porch in 2 vacant spots.  One on the corner and the second about 10 days later near the middle.  Here are pictures of the progress the one on the corner has made.
